Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

-Mary Oliver

    My favorite poem:

    Delusion Angel (David Jewell)

    Daydream delusion,
    limousine eyelash,
oh, baby with your pretty face,
drop a tear in my wineglass,
    look at those big eyes,
see what you mean to me,
    sweet cakes and milkshakes,
    I am a delusioned angel,
    I am a fantasy parade,
I want you to know what I think,
dont want you to guess anymore,
you have no idea where I came from,
we have no idea where we’re going,
    launched in life,
    like branches in the river,
    flowing downstream,
    caught in the current,
I’ll carry you, you’ll carry me,
    that’s how it could be,
    don’t you know me?
don’t you know me by now?

Been a while since you’ve shared a poem with us, Angela. Again, I am amazed at your love of poetry and find the poem you’ve shared and something I will carry around in my pocket.
